Nashville City PaperSinger/songwriter Eileen Carey has emerged over the last few years as a both an accomplished storyteller and effective, appealing stylist.

Carey, who will be performing four times Friday and Saturday at the “Indiegrrl Women in the Arts Conference” at Hotel Preston (733 Briley Parkway), makes music that deftly combines country influences with pop arrangements. Her songs also offer distinct, prominent messages about personal empowerment and emotional fulfillment.

Carey will perform at the “Rockin’ Moms” Showcase Friday at 9:50 p.m., and the “WomensRadio Guerilla Showcase” at 10:30 p.m. She’s also headlining at “Indiegrrl Showcase” Saturday at 6:10 p.m. and the “Nette Radio Showcase” at 10 p.m. For more information about the Indiegrrl Women in the Arts Conference check online at indiegrll.com or at (276) 224-0485.

While Carey, who divides her time between Music City and Los Angeles, doesn’t necessarily consider her songs “political,” she does embrace the term “topical,” and feels that events such as the Indiegrrl conference provide vital career assistance and support for female performers in any genre.

“Exposure and networking are two critical things for any indie artist,” Carey said. “At this event you meet performers across the board, women who are anxious to get their music out and looking at new and different ways of getting it to the public. Even in today’s environment, where you can use the Internet to get your message across, it’s still important to know key people and places and meet other performers. This conference is a wonderful way to do that.”

Carey has recently created a female networking site, themusicmom.com. Her single “That Was Her, This Is Now” won the 2009 Song of the Year honor in the fifth annual South Bay Music Awards. She also has another single, “Faith,” that’s a track on the newly released Rockin Moms, Vol. 2 compilation and her current CD Movin’ On (MyRecordLabel.net) has already scored a regional hit with the tune “Out With The Girls.” It’s also now getting attention at both adult alternative and country stations.

Some other top numbers from the disc include “Stand,” a vibrant piece about pursuing your goals no matter the obstacles and “Newsflash,” another composition that reflects Carey’s generally optimistic vision. But she can also do harder-edged lyric fare as well. The number “Faith” offers advice to anyone whose poor self-esteem keeps them in a bad relationship, while “He’s Not Mr. Right, He’s Mr. Right Now’ espouses enjoying the moment without worrying about the future.

“I think asserting yourself, having faith in your ability and being willing to take chances and pursue opportunities are all things that I emphasize in my songs,” Carey continued. “I don’t necessarily think any of these ideas fit the definition of what some might consider political or social advocacy, but they’re important qualities in terms of reaching your goals. I know I have a lot of women in my audience and they repeatedly tell me that those messages reach and inspire them.”

Although she’s steadily gaining more fans and getting a larger presence in Nashville, and also has a local management and booking team fueling her efforts, Carey says at this time she enjoys splitting time between Music City and the West Coast, and doesn’t anticipate relocating.

“I love many things about Nashville, and always look forward to coming here,” Carey concluded. “But there are also things about Los Angeles that still excite me, and the whole thing of dividing time and being in different places during the year seems to work right now.”

“THE FEMALE SPIKE LEE,” SONJA DUNSON, RELEASES MUSIC SOUNDTRACK FOR “YOU CAN’T BUY LOVE”

SONJA DUNSON(LOS ANGELES) – Renowned longtime film and TV star Sonja Dunson (‘The Female Spike Lee’) releases “YOU CAN’T BUY LOVE,” the companion seven-track music soundtrack to Dunson’s similarly-named, to-be-released movie. Set in Detroit, “YOU CAN’T BUY LOVE” is, in Dunson’s words, “an interracial love story triangle” in which the principals are a Black woman from a well-to-do family and a White male. “The parents disinherit her because (he’s) poor, not because he’s White,” explains Dunson, whose impetus for creating “YOU CAN’T BUY LOVE” was “to portray the upper-class Blacks.””

One of Hollywood’s earliest successful Black film and television stars, Dunson has a distinguished history in Tinsel town. The former “Miss Michigan Universe” winner was a regular on three long-running television series – “Lohman & Barkley,” “D.A.” and “Emergency,” and appeared in over twenty commercials while being represented by the prestigious William Morris Agency.

Indeed, Dunson earned over 2 million dollars before the age of 24! In 1977 Dunson created and published BLACK HOLLYWOOD, which was the only Black casting magazine for actors and actresses of color.

“YOU CAN’T BUY LOVE” – shot in 35 mm – was created on a budget of $120,000 which Dunson obtained via a grant from the U.S. Small Business Administration – one of only two producers to ever be funded for a motion picture. It took the ambitious Dunson less than a month to be approved by the SBA, which underwrote the movie project. A prolific writer, Dunson wrote the title track on “YOU CANT BUY LOVE” as well as co-wrote another song in the movie and on the soundtrack, “So Much Feeling In Your Love.”

“YOU CAN’T BUY LOVE” REVIEW COPIES AND SONJA DUNSON INTERVIEWS AVAILABLE.

What are you listening to?

The diversity of music that can often be found on a person’s iPod (or mp3 player of whatever flavor) is endlessly fascinating to me. Some of my band members never fail to surprise me with their new discoveries, which are usually WAY different than the music we write and record. I guess that ‘s the beauty of music, you never know who it will reach.

I’m often asked about what I’m listening to, so here are some of the recent additions to my iPod; no real surprises this week, but you never know when I’ll pull out something unexpected…

Keith Urban: Kiss A Girl, Sweet Thing, Standing Right in Front of You (all from the new Defying Gravity CD). The entire disc is really terrific; highly recommended!

Darius  Rucker: Don’t Think I Don’t Think About It, Forever Road. Darius’s voice is like an old friend. I saw Hootie & the Blowfish play early in their career and it’s been fun to watch his country transition.

Sheryl Crow: Love Is All There Is, Love Is Free. Love her — enough said!

I’d love to know what YOU’RE  listening to these days. Shoot me your playlist and I’ll post it here for some discussion!

Have a good one!
